Punjab launches Pakistan’s first e-Taxi scheme; CM Maryam Nawaz to inaugurate today

Punjab Launches Pakistan’s First e-Taxi Scheme | 1,100 EVs

In a first for the country, Punjab is set to roll out Pakistan’s inaugural electric taxi (e-Taxi) scheme, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz scheduled to formally inaugurate the project today.

The provincial government will distribute 1,100 electric vehicles (EVs) in the first phase. Officials say the initiative aims to promote clean transport, reduce fuel costs and create new employment opportunities across Punjab.

Under the scheme, 30% of vehicles are reserved for women. Authorities will assign a distinct colour to women-driven taxis to ensure visibility and enhance passenger safety.

The Punjab government will cover 50% of the down payment for male drivers and 60% for female drivers. In addition, it will bear the costs of vehicle registration, fitness certification and token tax. Drivers will pay the remaining amount through easy five-year installments.

To improve security, each e-Taxi will have a panic button linked to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority. The taxis will also be registered with ride-hailing platforms inDrive and Yango, enabling digital bookings.

Moreover, the government plans to install fast chargers at public locations to support EV operations. Drivers and passengers will also have access to digital payment options.

Officials believe the scheme will encourage eco-friendly mobility, cut urban pollution and provide sustainable income opportunities for hundreds of families.
