In a groundbreaking move, prisoners across Punjab exercised their fundamental right to vote in the upcoming General Election 2024.
Orchestrated under the vigilant supervision of Inspector General (IG) Jails, a total of 1,500 inmates from 43 prisons in Punjab actively participated in the electoral process through the facilitation of postal ballots.
The meticulous execution of the voting procedure was entrusted to prison superintendents, who meticulously ensured transparency and integrity throughout the process, all while being monitored by surveillance cameras.
Following completion, the sealed postal ballot papers were promptly dispatched to the relevant authorities.
Mian Farooq Nazir, a representative of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), expressed confidence that the prisoners’ postal votes would be duly counted, emphasizing their significant contribution to the overall electoral outcome.
This initiative, spearheaded by the ECP in collaboration with IG Jails Punjab, underscores a commitment to inclusivity and democratic principles.
Complying with the directive from the Election Commission, prison authorities played a pivotal role in collecting data for eligible prisoners, enabling their active participation in the electoral process.
With the votes cast by prisoners, Punjab jails have now become an integral and inclusive component of the broader electoral landscape, symbolizing the extension of democracy to all segments of society.
As the nation eagerly anticipates the results of the General Election 2024, the inclusion of prisoners in the voting process stands as a powerful testament to Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to upholding democratic values and ensuring equal representation for all citizens.
