LAHORE: The Punjab government is preparing key measures to manage the ongoing Punjab energy crisis, triggered by regional tensions affecting fuel supply.
According to official sources, the provincial Energy Department has submitted a set of recommendations to the government. These proposals aim to control fuel consumption and ensure fair distribution across the province.
One major proposal includes extending school holidays until April 15. In addition, authorities are considering introducing a hybrid education system to reduce energy usage in educational institutions.
Furthermore, the government is reviewing a fuel rationing strategy, similar to the federal model. Under this plan, a petrol coupon or digital allocation system may be introduced to ensure fair access to petrol and diesel.
Sources also revealed that fuel supply could be restricted based on vehicle numbers on specific days. This step is intended to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption and manage shortages effectively.
In the private sector, stricter work-from-home policies have been recommended to minimize commuting and save fuel. Meanwhile, authorities are also considering a complete ban on non-essential events.
To support public transport, the government may increase services such as metro and bus networks. At the same time, energy-saving steps are also under review. These include switching off LED billboards and decorative lighting.
Additionally, street lights may operate in alternate mode after 10pm, while market operating hours could be further reduced to conserve electricity.
Officials say these measures are under consideration and final decisions will be announced soon.
