The Reko Diq Project remained in focus during a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and John L. Thornton, chairman of Barrick Gold Corporation.
The meeting reviewed the current progress of the Reko Diq Project and discussed future plans for one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper and gold reserves. Both sides examined ongoing development work, coordination among stakeholders and ways to maintain steady progress on key milestones.
Officials also agreed to continue close cooperation to ensure the successful completion of the project and speed up activities linked to its development.
During the discussion, Ali Pervaiz Malik described the Reko Diq Project as a major opportunity for Pakistan’s economy and mineral sector. He said the project could attract large foreign investment, increase exports and create thousands of job opportunities, especially in Balochistan.
The minister added that the government was fully committed to supporting large-scale mining projects that strengthen the country’s natural resource sector and improve long-term economic growth.
John L. Thornton reaffirmed Barrick Gold’s commitment to the project and appreciated the support provided by the Pakistani government. He said strong coordination between all stakeholders remained important for the timely completion of such a large mining venture.
Barrick Gold continues to play a leading role in the project through its technical expertise and financial support.
Under the ownership structure of the Reko Diq Project, Barrick Gold holds a 50 percent share. Pakistani federal state-owned companies own 25 percent, while the Government of Balochistan controls the remaining 25 percent stake.
Officials said this partnership model was designed to balance international investment with local participation and regional interests.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides expressing confidence in the future of the Reko Diq Project and agreeing to continue working together for its successful development.
