PAKISTAN – The Pakistan Army has a proud legacy of courage and sacrifice, with countless stories of heroism etched in history. Among these stands the tale of Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed, a brave son of the soil who confronted the enemy in Lakshmipur, East Pakistan, and laid down his life for the honour and protection of his homeland.
With timely decision-making, fierce counterattacks, and unwavering faith in Allah, Major Tufail earned the distinction of halting the enemy’s advance and forcing them into retreat.
Lakshmipur, located near the Indian border in East Pakistan, had become a route for smuggling Indian goods. To curb these illegal activities, East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) were deployed along the border.
In August 1958, in blatant violation of international laws, Indian forces occupied Lakshmipur to shield smugglers. Major Tufail was tasked with reclaiming the area. On the night of August 7, he launched a surprise attack from an unexpected direction, catching the enemy off guard.
During the assault, Major Tufail came under heavy machine-gun fire. Despite profuse bleeding, he continued hurling grenades, silencing the enemy’s gun position. Mortally wounded, he embraced martyrdom but not before driving the enemy out of Lakshmipur.
By sacrificing his today for the country’s tomorrow, Major Tufail became a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
On the 67th anniversary of his martyrdom, Quran recitation and special prayers were held for the elevation of his ranks in the hereafter. Scholars paid tribute, stating, “The blood of martyrs never goes in vain. Nations that forget their heroes are destined for humiliation. The sacrifices of our martyrs are a debt upon us all.”
They added that Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed was a courageous son of the land who will forever live in the hearts of the people. Heroes like him, who lay down their lives for the nation’s dignity, are truly worthy of the highest honour. His martyrdom anniversary remains a symbol of the Pakistan Army’s unwavering sacrifices for the motherland.
