Russia’s upper house of parliament announced presidential election will be held on March 17, 2024.
The Federation Council unanimously approved the decision 162 votes in the house.
Valentina Matviyenko, head of the Federation Council, announced, “With this decision, we are effectively launching the start of the election campaign.” Notably, residents of annexed parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson regions in Ukraine will participate in the vote for the first time.
While President Vladimir Putin has not officially declared his candidacy for a new six-year term, Matviyenko emphasized the shared responsibility and destiny of the fatherland in choosing a head of state together.
