ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has taken action against Senator Faisal Vawda and MNA Mustafa Kamal for their alleged disrespectful remarks towards the judiciary.
In a suo motu case, a three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa, issued contempt of court show-cause notices to both politicians following their press conferences on May 15 and 16, respectively.
The court has demanded responses from Vawda and Kamal within two weeks and requested records of their speeches from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra). The contempt of court hearing has been adjourned until June 5.
Chief Justice Isa expressed concern over attacks on judicial institutions, emphasizing that criticism should be directed at individuals, not institutions. He condemned the broad criticisms made by the politicians, stressing the importance of constructive criticism. Justice Isa highlighted that lawmakers should address issues in parliament rather than at press conferences. He also addressed specific remarks made by Kamal regarding past judicial decisions, emphasizing the court’s role in upholding justice.
The Chief Justice criticized the selective media coverage, noting that positive remarks often go unnoticed while negative ones receive significant attention. The hearing has been postponed pending the submission of responses from Vawda and Kamal.
