ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Power has requested detailed information from the Power Division regarding payments made to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) over the past 20 years.
The committee sent a questionnaire to the Secretary of the Power Division, seeking specifics on the payments made to IPPs, the reasons behind these payments, and details about the sponsors of all privately set up power plants.
Additionally, the committee requested information on the construction costs of wind power plants and the production costs of electricity over the last six years. The Ministry of Power has been directed to provide all relevant details to the committee within three weeks.
Previously, Federal Minister of Energy Awais Leghari commented on the ongoing review of IPPs. Speaking to the media, Leghari explained that the issue is being examined from multiple perspectives. “We are assessing the remaining operational time of each IPP,” he stated.
“We are also evaluating the benefits or losses associated with each IPP and determining the necessary steps to phase out expensive power producers, as well as the financial implications of such actions,” the energy minister added. “Can we afford the cost of removing the IPPs?” he questioned.
