KARACHI: Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi declared on Wednesday that he has made a principled decision not to participate in the upcoming election.
Addressing the media outside the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court in Karachi, Abbasi questioned the basis of the cases against him and his colleagues. He pointed to the example of Nawaz Sharif, highlighting how decisions were swiftly made before the election, only for him to be acquitted by the High Court after five years.
Abbasi raised concerns about the authenticity of the cases brought forward by former NAB Chairman Javed Iqbal, particularly in light of Nawaz Sharif’s subsequent acquittal. He emphasized the importance of justice for the country’s development, stating that a nation built on injustice cannot prosper.
Calling for accountability, Abbasi asserted that Javed Iqbal, the former Chairman of NAB, must answer for his actions. In the current political climate, Abbasi suggested the possibility of a brief postponement of the election. While unaware of Chaudhry Nisar’s potential alliance with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), Abbasi reaffirmed his unwavering decision not to contest the election.
Expressing the need for elections with a focus on genuine governance rather than a pursuit of power for its own sake, the former Prime Minister urged for a thoughtful approach to the democratic process.
