PESHAWAR: The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has surged to become the predominant party in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, thanks to a substantial influx of independent members.
Following the general elections, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly witnessed a notable wave of independent members aligning with the Sunni Ittehad Council. With an impressive count of 90 independents joining forces with the party, it now stands as the leading force in the assembly.
This influx positions the party strongly to secure 21 out of the 26 reserved seats for women and is poised to claim all four reserved seats for minorities.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has seen its numbers rise with three independent members joining, bringing their total count to eight in the provincial assembly. This increase allows the PML-N to secure two seats reserved for women.
Likewise, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) is set to secure two seats for women, adding to its representation in the KP Assembly, which totals seven. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), with its four members, is anticipated to secure one seat for women.
This political reshuffle signifies a notable shift in power dynamics within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, with the Sunni Ittehad Council emerging as a formidable force. The inclusion of independent members has significantly bolstered the party’s representation and influence, potentially paving the way for policy changes and legislative initiatives in the province.
It is pertinent to mention here that PTI had fielded independent candidates in the general elections after the Supreme Court snatched its electoral symbol bat. As result of elections PTI won 87 KP assembly seats while three independent candidates joined it.
To secure reserved seats, PTI made an alliance with SIC across the country.
