PESHAWAR: At least six people lost their lives in an incident of Kurram violence on Wednesday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a passenger vehicle in Lower Kurram district, officials confirmed.
According to police, the attackers ambushed the vehicle as it passed through the area. The bodies of the victims were shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital.
Law enforcement authorities said the assailants fled after the assault. A search operation was launched, while investigators are working to identify those involved.
The latest strike comes only weeks after tribal elders in Lower Kurram and Sadda reached a one-year peace accord in July. The agreement was aimed at ending recurring clashes between local communities.
The deal was signed during a jirga at the Frontier Corps Fort in Sadda. Elders from the Sunni and Tori Bangash tribes, along with district administration and security officials, endorsed the truce under the Kohat Agreement framework.
Deputy Commissioner Ashfaq Khan had described the accord as a “milestone for regional stability,” crediting the cooperation of tribal leaders and the sacrifices of security forces in restoring calm.
However, the fresh Kurram attack has once again tested the fragile peace. Residents fear that continuing violence could undermine the agreement and reignite tribal hostilities.
Security agencies have pledged to track down the perpetrators and prevent further bloodshed in the conflict-prone district.
