Islamabad: In a groundbreaking decision on Monday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and a seven-member bench, overturned the lifetime disqualification under Article 62(1)(f).
The verdict, announced after considering arguments from both sides, opens the door for political leaders like PML-N Supremo Nawaz Sharif and IPP Chief Jahangir Khan Tarin, reversing the previous decision against Sharif.
With a majority vote of 6-1, the bench nullified the prior ruling, with Justice Yahya Afridi in dissent but aligning with the court’s initial judgment.
This ruling represents a significant departure from the earlier landmark judgment in the Samiullah Baloch case, indicating a shift in the interpretation of the law regarding the duration of disqualification for individuals under Article 62(1)(f) following amendments to the Elections Act 2017.
