The Supreme Court is set to address the matter of lifetime disqualification of lawmakers, a crucial issue that may impact Nawaz Sharif’s eligibility for the upcoming general elections on February 8.
A seven-member larger bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, will deliberate on contradictions in the Election Act, 2017, and a Supreme Court verdict.
The discrepancies were highlighted during a petition filed by former PML-N provincial lawmaker Sardar Meer Badshah Khan Qaisrani, challenging his lifetime disqualification over a fake degree in 2007.
CJP Faez Isa emphasized the need to resolve whether the parliament’s legislation or the Supreme Court’s judgment on lifetime disqualification takes precedence.
The issue was referred to a three-member committee to determine the course of action.
