ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will resume hearings on the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) plea regarding reserved seats today.
A 13-member full court, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, will begin the hearing at 11:30 am.
During today’s session, SIC counsel Faisal Siddiqui will present his arguments in response to the assertions made by the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) lawyer and the Attorney General.
The bench will decide whether reserved seats will be allocated to the SIC or other parties, or if the issue will be referred to parliament.
To date, there have been seven hearings on the SIC plea. The ECP maintains that the SIC is not entitled to reserved seats, a position also supported by the PML-N, the PPP, and the JUI-F, who oppose the SIC’s petition for reserved seats for women and minorities.
Justice Athar Minallah remarked that it is the judiciary’s responsibility to correct any mistakes made by the ECP, which he believes unconstitutionally denied the SIC’s right by excluding it.
