A recent survey revealed deep public concerns about the PTI protest held in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Nearly 70% of participants expressed fear and refused to support the protest under any circumstances.
The Institute for Public Opinion Research (IPOR) conducted this survey, gathering data from over 1,000 residents of the twin cities. The survey took place between November 26 and 29, 2024, offering a clear picture of public sentiment in the region.
While most opposed the PTI protest, 24% fully supported it, saying they would back it regardless of the consequences. Another 8% chose not to share their views.
Opinions were split on whether the government’s actions, including lockdowns, were appropriate. About 48% found the response ineffective, while 42% said it was entirely justified. The remaining 10% did not express an opinion on this issue.
The survey highlighted significant disruption to daily life. About 82% of respondents said their routines were severely impacted by the protest and lockdown. In contrast, 17% claimed they were unaffected, and 1% refrained from answering.
When asked about the effect on businesses, 74% reported losses in trade and income due to the lockdown and protests. Meanwhile, 24% disagreed, stating their businesses were unaffected, and 2% gave no response.
The survey also addressed the role of protests in political instability. Around 66% of respondents believed political rallies and demonstrations were the main cause of instability. On the other hand, 26% disagreed, and 8% did not comment.
On the economic crisis, 53% blamed the government for the negative impact. Another 18% held PTI responsible, while 12% pointed fingers at others. A further 17% avoided giving any opinion.
Interestingly, 73% of respondents supported peaceful protests by any political group. However, 24% opposed even peaceful demonstrations, and 0.3% refrained from commenting.
This PTI protest survey sheds light on the challenges faced by residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. It also reveals divided public opinion on political movements and their broader impact on daily life and the economy.
