In a devastating incident south of Kuwait City, a deadly blaze engulfed a six-storey building housing immigrant workers, resulting in a tragic loss of life. According to Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, the death toll has risen to 50, with most of the victims being from India. Additionally, three Filipinos lost their lives in the fire, while many others sustained injuries.
The fire broke out early Wednesday morning in Mangaf, causing black smoke to billow from the building that accommodated nearly 200 workers. The majority of Kuwait’s population consists of foreigners, mainly from South and Southeast Asia, employed in construction and service sectors.
Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya expressed grief over the incident, noting that efforts are ongoing to identify the victims, some of whom have suffered severe burns and require DNA testing for identification.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that India is providing all possible assistance to those affected by the tragedy. His office announced compensation for the families of the deceased, and efforts are underway to repatriate remains.
In response to the tragedy, Kuwaiti authorities have detained the building’s owner on suspicion of negligence. They have also warned of strict consequences for any buildings found violating safety regulations.
This incident recalls a similar tragedy in 2009 when 57 people perished in a fire set by a disgruntled woman at a wedding tent in Kuwait.
