US President Donald Trump has said that a US-Iran nuclear agreement is close to completion, claiming that negotiators have reached an excellent deal and are now finalizing the necessary documents.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the finalization process should be completed within the next few days. He added that the agreement could be signed in Europe and described the development as a positive step forward.
However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has downplayed reports about the timing and location of any signing ceremony. A ministry spokesperson said such claims are based on media speculation and that discussions about where and when the agreement will be signed are premature until all details of the text are finalized.
Earlier, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had decided to cancel a planned military strike against Iran after receiving approval for negotiations and a possible agreement from Iran’s top leadership.
Trump stressed that the most important outcome of the proposed deal would be ensuring that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons. He said the agreement is nearly complete and that a formal signing could take place soon.
The US president also praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. He said he had spoken with leaders from Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and other countries, and planned to speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well.
According to Trump, regional leaders are pleased with the progress, and he claimed the broader Middle East is also welcoming the development.
When asked how confident he was that an agreement with Iran could be reached by the end of the week, Trump replied that it could happen very soon, possibly before the weekend is over.
A reporter also asked whether Iran’s Supreme Leader had approved the proposed agreement. Trump responded that, based on the information available to him, the answer was yes.
Trump further stated that once the agreement is signed, the US naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz would be lifted immediately.
Asked why this round of negotiations appeared more promising than previous efforts, Trump said Iran had suffered significant losses and was now far more interested in reaching an agreement. He added that Iran’s enthusiasm for a deal had increased considerably in recent weeks.
