GEORGIA: Two planes collided on the runway at Atlanta Airport in Georgia, USA, with photos on social media showing severe damage to the tail of one of the aircraft.
Delta Air Lines confirmed that the incident involved one of its planes and a regional jet while taxiing for departure. Both aircraft sustained damage, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Delta has announced that affected passengers will be rebooked on alternative flights.
The collision occurred when the wing of a Delta Airbus A350, bound for Tokyo-Haneda, made contact with the tail of an Endeavor Air CRJ-900, scheduled to depart for Lafayette, Louisiana. Endeavor Air, a regional carrier, is a subsidiary of Delta. The crash resulted in damage to the regional jet’s tail and the A350’s wing.
A passenger on one of the planes described the incident on Twitter as “very jarring,” noting “metal scraping sounds followed by loud bangs.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that it will investigate the collision.
This incident follows a similar occurrence earlier this year at London’s Heathrow Airport, where an empty Virgin Atlantic 787 being towed from Terminal 3 clipped the wingtip of a stationary British Airways Airbus A350. Video footage revealed minor damage to both planes, and no passengers were injured in that collision.
