Martin Griffiths, the outgoing under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief at the United Nations, has condemned Israel’s actions in the Gaza conflict as a “betrayal of humanity.” Griffiths called for accountability and a “collective determination” to address the devastating impact of the conflict.
In a statement marking six months since the war began, Griffiths highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with over 33,000 people killed and widespread destruction of homes, health facilities, and schools. He expressed concern over the lack of global action to end the conflict and address the resulting humanitarian crisis.
The conflict has also had severe economic repercussions, with over 200,000 jobs lost in Gaza and a significant decrease in GDP. The agricultural and fisheries sectors, crucial for food security, have been severely affected.
Griffiths emphasized the need for immediate humanitarian assistance, economic recovery efforts, and a comprehensive political plan, including a two-State solution, to restore hope and stability in Gaza.
