FO Clarifies UNSC Controversy After Columnist Seen Behind Defence Minister Khawaja Asif

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has distanced itself from a controversy after columnist Shama Junejo was seen seated behind Defence Minister Khawaja Asif during his address to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on September 24, 2025. The FO clarified that her presence did not have official approval, sparking debate across social media.

The incident triggered backlash as online critics accused the government of including Junejo in Pakistan’s official delegation despite allegations of her past support for Israel. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, however, rejected the criticism, saying he had no role in determining who sat behind him. He reiterated his decades-long commitment to the Palestinian cause, declaring: “My views on Israel and Zionism are nothing but hatred.”

Asif explained that he delivered the UNSC address on behalf of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and stressed that only the Foreign Office had the authority to explain Junejo’s seating. He added that his public record showed a consistent stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza and unwavering support for Palestine.

Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed through its official X account that Junejo was “not authorised” to sit with Pakistan’s delegation and was not listed in the official letter of credence for the 80th UNGA Session. The FO clarified that her seating behind the defence minister had no approval from the Deputy Prime Minister or Foreign Minister.

In response to the criticism, Shama Junejo denied accusations of supporting Israel and shared her past social media posts condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.
