WASHINGTON: The United States has expressed its concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression and said that it believes journalists play crucial in ensuring fair and transparent elections.
Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, addressed reporters in Washington on Thursday, asserting that the future leadership of Pakistan is a matter for the Pakistani people to decide.
Responding to a question, Patel stated, “Our focus remains on the democratic process. We strongly believe that a free and independent media is crucial for healthy democracies, enabling an informed electorate to make decisions and hold the government accountable. Journalists, in particular, play a critical role in covering elections that are fair and transparent.”
He further conveyed ongoing concerns about reports indicating restrictions on freedom of expression, association, and the press. Patel affirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting free and fair elections globally, including in Bangladesh and Pakistan. He added that the U.S. will address any discrepancies observed in the region and those inconsistent with the stated intentions of Pakistani authorities.
Regarding tensions between Pakistan and Iran, Patel expressed U.S. apprehension about escalating tensions in the region. He highlighted concerns about Iran’s destabilizing and provocative actions and assured that the U.S. will maintain close communication with Pakistani counterparts while closely monitoring the situation in the region.
