US Gripped by Dangerous Winter Storm, 200 Million at Risk as Temperatures Could Drop to -46°C

Severe US Winter Storm Puts 200 Million at Risk, Temperatures to Hit -46°C

Washington: A powerful and potentially life-threatening winter storm has swept across large parts of the United States, placing more than 200 million people at risk as extreme cold, heavy snowfall and freezing rain disrupt normal life.

According to the US National Weather Service, conditions could turn deadly in several regions due to plunging temperatures and strong winds. Since the storm began on Friday, emergencies have been declared in at least 16 states.

As reported by the BBC, major cities including Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York are expected to face severe snowfall. Forecasts indicate that more than one foot of snow could blanket areas stretching from Colorado to West Virginia, as well as New York City and Boston.

Weather officials warned that the storm may cause major travel disruptions, prolonged power outages, and widespread damage to trees and infrastructure.

The meteorological department said heavy snowfall is expected across the southern Rocky Mountains and central plains, gradually spreading toward the Mid-Atlantic states and the northeastern US. In some regions, snowfall could exceed 30 centimetres.

In northeastern New Jersey and southeastern New York, including New York City, snowfall of 10 to 14 inches is forecast from Sunday morning through Monday. Due to strong winds, temperatures may feel as low as -23°C.

Meanwhile, southern New England, including Boston, could receive 12 to 17 inches of snow, accompanied by wind speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Wind chill in these areas may drop to -26°C.

Experts warned that northern plains states could see record-breaking cold, with wind chill temperatures possibly falling below -46°C, posing a serious threat to human life.

Large parts of the southeastern United States are also expected to experience freezing temperatures. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, take safety precautions, and stay updated with official weather alerts.
