The United States has once again declared its neutral position on the Kashmir dispute. This comes after rising tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
During a recent press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce made Washington’s stance clear. She said the United States was not taking sides in the Kashmir dispute, despite the evolving situation between the two neighbouring countries. “We are not taking any immediate position on the Jammu and Kashmir issue,” Bruce stated. “The situation remains fluid, and we are monitoring it closely.”
She also addressed the recent violence in Pahalgam. The attack claimed the lives of more than two dozen tourists. Bruce condemned the act in strong words. “Those behind this tragic attack must be held accountable,” she said. She offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. “We also wish a quick recovery to those who were injured,” she added.
When asked if the United States still stands by former President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate the Kashmir dispute, Bruce declined to elaborate. “President Trump and the Secretary of State have already shared their position on this matter. I have no further comments at this time,” she responded.
The spokesperson’s remarks come at a time when the Kashmir dispute has again become a flashpoint between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. While Pakistan blames India’s actions in IIOJK for the unrest, New Delhi accuses Pakistan of backing militants. Despite the rising strain, the US remains firm on staying neutral in this complex territorial conflict.
In a separate statement, Bruce commented on the Middle East. She reaffirmed US support for sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. But she made it clear that such aid must not reach terrorist groups. She also confirmed that the next round of nuclear talks with Iran is scheduled to be held in Oman. The previous meetings, she noted, had been “positive and productive.”
Although the Kashmir dispute continues to stir regional unrest, the United States is sticking to its position of non-involvement. Washington maintains that any resolution must come directly through dialogue between India and Pakistan. Its stance on the Kashmir dispute remains one of cautious observation.
