WASHINGTON: The United States has issued a clear warning to India. Washington urged New Delhi to avoid aggressive actions and protect regional stability. This message came during a high-level diplomatic meeting amid growing India-Pakistan tensions.
Indian Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri met US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in Washington. The talks covered India-US relations and the ongoing situation in South Asia.
US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the discussion. She said both sides talked about their growing partnership. However, the central focus remained the fragile peace between India and Pakistan.
Diplomatic insiders revealed key details. The American side expressed concern over the rising risk of conflict between the two nuclear neighbors. They strongly emphasized the need for calm and dialogue to preserve regional stability.
This conversation took place days after a major incident. On May 6, India accused Pakistan of being behind the killings of tourists in Pahalgam, a part of Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan rejected the claims. In what it described as a response to “unprovoked aggression,” Islamabad reportedly downed six Indian aircraft. These included a Rafale fighter and a surveillance drone.
Following this dramatic escalation, the United States stepped in. It quietly helped mediate a ceasefire between the two sides. The truce is still holding. But observers say Indian provocations continue to test regional stability.
Foreign Secretary Misri arrived in Washington on May 27. His three-day visit aimed to boost ties with the US. Still, South Asia’s security issues dominated the meetings.
In their session on Wednesday night, Deputy Secretary Landau praised the US-India partnership. But he gave a strong reminder. He said that the alliance must not threaten regional stability or peace in South Asia.
“The US has always asked both countries to stay calm and avoid solo actions that can fuel tensions,” said a diplomatic official familiar with the discussion.
Landau also raised other pressing matters. These included better market access for American businesses, joint efforts on migration, and tackling drug trafficking. All these topics are part of the evolving US-India relationship.
Meanwhile, the US is staying active behind the scenes. Backchannel talks are ongoing with both Islamabad and New Delhi. The goal is to stop further escalation and keep promoting dialogue. The situation in Kashmir remains a key area of concern.
American officials continue to stress that peace and regional stability must remain a shared goal. Both countries are being urged to act responsibly and prevent another slide into conflict.
