KURRAM: Minister for Provincial Assembly (MPA) Ali Hadi Irfani has criticized the deteriorating situation in Kurram, particularly after an armed attack on Friday. He highlighted that constant violations of the peace agreement are exacerbating the hardships faced by the public.
“The government must assert its authority and take action against those who are undermining peace. Rather than punishing the public, authorities should address the ongoing treaty violations,” Irfani stated. He added that these violations seem to be an attempt to further distress the already suffering 500,000 residents of the region.
On Friday, Kurram’s Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Saeed Manan Khan was injured in a shooting incident in the Boshehra area of Upper Kurram Tehsil, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Manan, accompanied by tribal leader Shafique Hussain, was on his way to enforce a ceasefire agreement when he was attacked. He was subsequently taken to Parachinar District Headquarters Hospital for surgery and later transferred to Peshawar for further treatment.
Police officials confirmed that armed men attacked the Toot Piyala region in Lower Kurram using heavy and automatic weapons, but they fled after police retaliated. No casualties were reported in this incident.
In a separate attack in Boshehra, police officer Ashiq Hussain was killed by a sniper shot after the Boshehra attack was neutralized. His funeral was held on Saturday, and he was posthumously awarded a Guard of Honour. Tragically, two of his brothers had also fallen victim to terror incidents in the past.
Activist and leader Yusuf Lala expressed his concern over the ongoing violence, stressing that the four months of road closures had placed the local population in crisis.
Earlier, a convoy of 33 vehicles intended to resupply local traders in the northwest Kurram region with rice, flour, and cooking oil, alongside two aid vehicles carrying essential medicines, was attacked. At least 10 people died in the attack. The mutilated bodies of four missing drivers from the aid convoy were discovered in the Urwali area of Lower Kurram. The victims had their hands tied behind their backs and had been shot.
At the beginning of January this year, after the Kurram lockdown was lifted, Deputy Commissioner Javaidullah Mehsud, along with seven others, was injured when extremists attacked a convoy transporting aid to Parachinar in Bagan.
