Worst US Storm Warning: 20M at Risk, 7,000 Flights Disrupted

WASHINGTON: Northeastern states in the United States are on high alert as a powerful winter storm — forecast to dump up to 18–24 inches of snow — barrels across the I-95 corridor and threatens life and travel.

US media say the fast-moving system, described as a “bomb cyclone”, could bring hurricane-force wind gusts near 70 mph. Officials warn over 20 million people could be affected as extreme snow and wind hit roads and cities.

The storm has already wreaked havoc on air travel. More than 6,000 flights have been cancelled and hundreds more delayed. In total, around 7,000 flights have been impacted so far.

Major airports feeling the impact include New York, Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC.

Authorities in six states have declared emergency alerts, urging residents to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel. Local officials also warned of dangerous road conditions and power outages due to heavy snow and strong winds.

Weather agencies continue to update storm forecasts as conditions rapidly change, and residents are advised to follow official guidance for safety.
