ISLAMABD: Voting has begun in the national and provincial assemblies as well as the Senate to elect Pakistan’s 14th president.
Voting is being held through a secret ballot and will continue until 4 pm.
Former president Asif Ali Zardari, allied parties and Mahmood Khan Achakzai from the Sunni Ittehad Council, are the contenders for the presidency.
The ruling coalition, comprising the PML-N, PPP, and MQM-P, has thrown its support behind Asif Ali Zardari, the former president.
The President is chosen by an electoral college composed of members from the Senate, National Assembly, and the four provincial assemblies.
A joint session of the parliament is convened at the parliament house in Islamabad today, allowing members of the National Assembly and the Senate to exercise their voting rights.
Similarly, the provincial assemblies are conducting their sessions today for the election process.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has designated all four assemblies as polling stations for the presidential elections.
A total of 162 members from the Sindh assembly, 353 from Punjab, 65 from Balochistan, and 115 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will cast their votes to elect the new president.
With a majority in all assemblies and the Senate, PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is poised to assume the presidency of Pakistan for the second time.
