PESHAWAR: Former senator Hidayatullah Khan, along with his two guards, was killed in a bomb blast in Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.
The explosion, caused by a remote-controlled device, targeted his vehicle in the Dama Dola area of Bajaur. Alongside Hidayatullah Khan, his guards Irfan and Nazar Deen also killed in the blast.
Hidayatullah Khan was on his way to an election campaign when the attack occurred. He was the brother of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shaukat Ullah. A by-election for provincial assembly constituency PK-22 is scheduled for July 11.
It is pertinent to mention here that he had previously survived an attempt on his life.
Hidayatullah Khan served as a senator for two consecutive terms, from 2012 to 2024. He was elected to the upper house of parliament as a candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the 2012 Senate elections.
In 2018, he won as an independent candidate supported by the then ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He retired from the Senate in March this year upon completing his six-year term.
Mubarak Zeb Khan, bother of late Rehan Zeb Khan, won both the PK-22 and NA-8 seats in the April 21 by-election. However, he chose to retain the NA seat and resigned from the provincial assembly slot.
