ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has overturned the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)’s decision to replace Election Tribunal judge Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.
Chief Justice Amir Farooq announced the verdict, which had been reserved earlier. The IHC has directed the ECP to reconsider the case.
The ECP had appointed a retired judge to the tribunal, replacing Justice Jahangiri, a move that was challenged by PTI leaders Shoaib Shaheen, Aamir Mughal, and Ali Bukhari.
Previously, the ECP accepted petitions from Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) MNAs requesting the transfer of the election tribunal in all three constituencies of Islamabad. This decision was made by a four-member bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja.
The bench accepted pleas from Khurram Nawaz, Anjum Aqeel, and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, who argued that the tribunal was not impartial. All three candidates were elected from Islamabad.
In the February 8 general elections, PML-N candidates secured all three National Assembly seats in the federal capital territory.
