ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the superintendent of Adiala Jail to facilitate online meetings between the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan and his relatives and legal representatives until security concerns are adequately addressed.
This directive came in response to a request from the PTI founder seeking permission to meet with his lawyers and family members, with the IHC ordering the jail superintendent to provide a written report on the implementation of this order by March 22.
The court’s written order cited security reasons for the ban on in-person meetings between the PTI founder and his legal team within the jail premises. It suggested that if physical meetings were not feasible, internet access should be provided within the jail to enable online interactions.
During the proceedings, the Advocate General of Islamabad objected to the idea of online meetings, citing that they were not permitted under jail rules. The court expressed surprise at this objection, questioning what topics besides political matters could be discussed during such meetings.
Furthermore, PTI lawyers had filed a contempt of court petition against the jail superintendent for violating the court’s decision by denying the former prime minister the opportunity to meet with his legal counsel and relatives while in custody.
