Imran Khan’s bail plea in the cipher case was rejected by the Islamabad High Court on Friday. Justice Aamer Farooq announced the verdict after it was reserved on October 16.
On the preceding day, the IHC rejected Khan’s petition challenging the trial’s location in jail, emphasizing his right to a fair trial. The former prime minister has been in custody since August 5, following a conviction for corrupt practices in the Toshakhana case.
Initially arrested on August 29 within Attock prison, Khan secured bail in the Toshakhana case but remained detained due to the cipher case. Despite facing various charges, including corruption and involvement in the May 9 riots, Khan has yet to appear in court since his imprisonment.
All cipher case hearings have occurred within the prison premises, first in Attock and later in Adiala. Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been indicted in the cipher case, with Khan facing charges related to the unauthorized possession and communication of classified information. Qureshi is accused of aiding him. A guilty verdict could result in a sentence of up to fourteen years or even death for Khan.
