The Islamabad High Court (IHC) took a significant step on Monday by suspending the sentence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana case.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq announced that the appeal against their punishment would be scheduled for hearing after Eid holidays.
Earlier, Accountability court’s Judge Muhammad Bashir had sentenced Khan and Bushra to 14 years in prison with rigorous punishment in the Toshakhana reference back in January. Additionally, the judge had imposed a 10-year disqualification on the former prime minister while levying a fine of Rs1.57 billion, divided equally between the couple.
During the proceedings, Khan emphasized that his wife had no involvement in the case and was being unjustly implicated.
Chief Justice Farooq highlighted that the cypher case would be concluded shortly, but the court couldn’t immediately fix the hearing for the Toshakhana case following today’s proceedings.
He clarified, “The cypher case has been scheduled for hearing the next day, and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arguments need to commence. It’s uncertain how long this will take. Therefore, the hearing for the Toshakhana case is postponed until after Eid.”
