New Delhi:
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia has said that Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has been directed to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, citing heightened tensions between the two countries.
The development follows criticism by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sangeet Som, who targeted Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of KKR, over the inclusion of the Bangladeshi player in the franchise. Mr Som described the decision as “anti-national”, according to Indian media reports.
Mustafizur’s signing by KKR had come amid allegations by India’s right-wing groups regarding attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Last month, hundreds of protesters gathered near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi following the killing of Hindu factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district.
Local authorities said the victim was attacked by a mob over allegations that he had made blasphemous remarks. A total of 12 people were arrested in connection with the incident.
Speaking to Indian news agency ANI, Mr Saikia said the BCCI had instructed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman in light of recent developments. He added that the franchise could apply for a replacement player if required, subject to approval by the board.
In a statement, KKR said that under IPL regulations, the team would be permitted to name a replacement player, with further details to be announced later.
News agency Reuters reported that it had contacted Mustafizur Rahman for comment on the matter.
The 30-year-old left-arm pacer has previously represented Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He has taken 65 wickets in 60 matches in the tournament.
KKR had purchased Mustafizur for 92 million Indian rupees (approximately $1.02 million) at last month’s auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.
According to the Hindustan Times, India’s opposition Congress party condemned the remarks made by Mr Som against Shah Rukh Khan. The former Uttar Pradesh legislator questioned why the actor was investing in a player from a country he alleged was acting against India.
The controversy has further strained relations between India and Bangladesh, which have remained tense since former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina relocated to New Delhi following anti-government protests in 2024.
The 19th edition of the IPL is scheduled to begin on March 26, while India and Sri Lanka will co-host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, starting in February.
