ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court was informed on Wednesday about the recovery of Kashmiri poet Ahmed Farhad, who had been reported missing. The Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) informed the court that Farhad has been located and is currently under the custody of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Police.
During the hearing on the poet’s disappearance, the AGP presented a report from the Dhirkot police station in AJK, confirming Farhad’s arrest. However, details regarding the circumstances of his detention and the reasons for his arrest remain undisclosed.
The court expressed relief over Farhad’s recovery, which had been a matter of concern among literary circles and the public. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani of the IHC presided over the hearing based on a petition filed by Ain Naqvi, Farhad’s wife. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and AGP Mansoor Usman Awan were also present.
Addressing the law minister, the court inquired why he was on the opposing side despite being appointed as a judicial assistant. The minister assured compliance with any court orders. Justice Kayani noted the resolution of the matter upon the minister’s presence.
He emphasized the nation’s support for the armed forces and clarified that the court’s questions remained unanswered. He reiterated the importance of adhering to the law and hoped for institutional compliance.
When inquiring about the process if intelligence agencies detain someone, the law minister cited inappropriate social media content. Justice Kayani, however, stated his detachment from social media and television.
He suggested involving Farhad’s family in the case and proposed forming a larger bench to address missing persons’ issues.
