KARACHI: The anchorperson of a private news channel, Ashfaque Ishaq Satti, has been promptly suspended in response to allegations of domestic violence made by his second wife, Nomaika Tahir Mehmood.
Accusing Satti of aggravated assault and attempted murder, Nomaika filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Nazimabad police station, prompting the channel management to take swift action and suspend the anchorperson.
Nomaika shared her ordeal on social media, stating that Satti forcibly took her from her mother’s house to his residence, where she endured physical abuse, hunger, and thirst for several days. She managed to escape and sought refuge at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where she underwent a medical check-up before filing the FIR.
The incident, as per Nomaika, occurred on January 22. Despite the registration of the case, she claimed that no action has been taken by the police due to her husband’s alleged influence.
Accompanying her statement were photos displaying bruises on her body and a copy of the FIR, although the post has since been deleted.
The FIR includes sections 324 (attempt to murder), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 337-A(I) (intent to cause harm), and 337-F(I) (intent to cause injury).
In her complaint, Nomaika mentioned that she visited her diabetic mother in Jinnah Garden Model Colony from January 19 to 22. She alleged that her husband, without basis, quarreled and subjected her to violence, resulting in severe injuries to her left eye. She claimed he also threatened their son.
As of now, there has been no statement from Ashfaque Ishaq Satti. The news channel, however, announced that the anchorperson will remain suspended until the legal resolution of the matter. The organization emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards violence or threats, both in the workplace and at home, and pledged to take such incidents extremely seriously.
