ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, Pakistan has achieved a notable milestone in the United Nations (UN) E-Government Development Index (EGDI) for 2024, rising 14 places to secure the 136th position. This marks the first time the country has entered the “High EGDI category,” reflecting substantial improvements in its digital government capabilities.
The latest rankings reveal that Pakistan’s EGDI value has increased to 0.5095, up from 0.4238 in the 2022 survey. While still trailing behind global leaders like Denmark (0.9847) and regional frontrunners such as Singapore (0.969) and the Maldives (0.6745), this upward shift underscores Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing its e-governance framework.
Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, celebrated this achievement during an event in Islamabad, reiterating the government’s dedication to building a digital Pakistan. “We have moved from the middle tier of digital e-governance to the high tier, and this is a significant accomplishment,” she stated.
Khawaja emphasized the importance of collective efforts to foster innovation among the youth, highlighting the vital role of the private sector in driving the digital transformation. She noted that the government is actively working to ensure stable and fast digital connectivity across the nation.
In addition to advancements in e-governance, the Minister pointed out that Pakistan has made significant strides in cyber security, attaining top-tier status in this critical area. This improvement is crucial for safeguarding digital infrastructure and protecting citizens in an increasingly connected world.
Pakistan’s impressive leap in the UN E-Government Development Index is a testament to the ongoing efforts to enhance digital services and promote efficient governance. As the country continues to invest in technology and innovation, the focus remains on achieving a more inclusive and accessible digital landscape for all citizens.
