Pakistan has achieved remarkable progress in strengthening its border security. Officials recently announced that over 98% of the fencing along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border is now complete. This major initiative, part of the Western Border Management Regime, aims to enhance stability and stop illegal activities across borders.
The fencing project spans rough terrains, including mountainous regions. It highlights Pakistan’s dedication to protecting its western boundaries. Similarly, 91% of fencing along the Pakistan-Iran border has also been finished. Combined, these efforts cover an impressive 3,217 kilometers.
To further secure the borders, the government has prioritized building fortified structures. Around 92% of forts on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border are completed. On the Pakistan-Iran border, 40% of forts are ready, with remaining work advancing swiftly.
These efforts have come at a cost. Security personnel have made sacrifices, losing their lives during cross-border firing incidents. Despite the challenges, authorities remain determined to finish the projects.
As part of broader measures for border security, over 72% of tribal areas have been cleared of landmines and unexploded ordinances. These operations have recovered numerous dangerous items, ensuring safer conditions for local communities.
The government has also intensified actions against smuggling, drug trafficking, hoarding, and electricity theft. These operations, conducted alongside Pakistan’s armed forces, have significantly reduced illegal activities. The introduction of the “One Document Regime” has further decreased unauthorized border crossings. Legal passport use has increased as a result.
Additionally, Pakistan has facilitated the repatriation of 815,000 undocumented Afghan nationals since September 2023. Officials stress that this step aligns with efforts to maintain law and order in the country.
With the border fencing almost complete, authorities believe these measures will strengthen national security. They also expect the efforts to promote peace and ensure the safety of citizens and neighboring regions.
