NEW YORK – As tensions grow in the Middle East after the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Pakistan supports Iran at the United Nations Security Council. Pakistan’s UN envoy, Asim Iftikhar, urged global powers to avoid further escalation. He stressed that dialogue and diplomacy are the only paths to peace.
“We must act now to stop the crisis from worsening,” Iftikhar said during an emergency UNSC session. His remarks came shortly after the United States launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. U.S. President Donald Trump described the action as a “spectacular success” to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Tehran has strongly rejected that claim.
In response to the attacks, the Iranian parliament moved to block the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is a major global trade route. Iranian officials said Washington had destroyed ongoing negotiations with force instead of words. “It wasn’t Iran that left the table,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters at the OIC summit in Istanbul. “The U.S. walked away from diplomacy with bombs.”
Araghchi warned that the airstrikes crossed a major red line. He urged the global community to take a clear and firm stand. “Global norms and diplomacy are now under direct threat,” he said.
Speaking at the UNSC, Ambassador Iftikhar echoed the Foreign Office’s condemnation of the bombings. He said Pakistan supports Iran’s right to self-defence. The strikes, he added, had set a dangerous precedent. They now pose a grave threat to civilians in the region and beyond.
He denounced the attacks on nuclear facilities monitored by the IAEA. He also confirmed that Pakistan supports Iran through diplomatic channels. Islamabad joined Russia and China in pushing a draft resolution. The document calls for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire.
The resolution also urges all involved parties to avoid further military action. It demands full protection for civilians and infrastructure. Moreover, it supports a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue, acceptable to all.
Iftikhar stressed that any rise in aggression may lead to disaster across the region. He warned that the UN must protect lives and enforce global laws. “All sides must follow international humanitarian law,” he said. He also called on the UNSC to champion peace talks and stick to the values of the UN Charter.
Pakistan supports Iran not only at the UN but also at the highest level. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the phone. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and wished a quick recovery for the injured. PM Shehbaz also backed Iran’s right to defend itself.
The premier strongly condemned the U.S. attack. He linked it to Israel’s earlier strikes, calling them unprovoked and unjust. PM Shehbaz reaffirmed that Pakistan supports Iran and its people. He also praised the country’s leadership for staying firm under pressure.
President Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its full support. He appreciated PM Shehbaz, the Pakistani government, and its military leadership. The Iranian leader emphasized the importance of Muslim unity at this critical time. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
