Pakistan warns Afghanistan over terrorism support as tensions between Islamabad and Kabul continue to rise over cross-border militancy concerns. The strong remarks came from Defence Minister Khawaja Asif during a session of the National Assembly in Islamabad.
While speaking in the assembly, Khawaja Asif said that Pakistan warns Afghanistan over terrorism support and will respond firmly if militant activities continue to originate from Afghan soil. He stressed that Islamabad has serious concerns over what it describes as continued backing of militants by the Taliban-led administration in Kabul.
The minister stated that Pakistan warns Afghanistan over terrorism support because, according to him, the Afghan authorities have failed to provide written guarantees to stop cross-border attacks. He added that only verbal assurances have been given, which are not enough for Islamabad.
He further warned that if such support for militants does not end, Pakistan could be forced into a stronger response. He also claimed that Kabul has not acted independently in addressing Pakistan’s security concerns and described Afghanistan as being influenced by external interests.
Khawaja Asif said Pakistan has already tried diplomatic efforts with the help of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye to reduce tensions and improve cooperation. However, he noted that these efforts have not produced a lasting agreement so far.
During his speech, he also criticized lack of cooperation from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in handling security challenges, although he acknowledged recent improvements in coordination.
The minister highlighted the sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces, saying they continue to defend the country against terrorism threats on multiple fronts.
The situation between Pakistan and Afghanistan has remained tense in recent years, with Islamabad repeatedly urging Kabul to ensure its territory is not used for militant activities against Pakistan. Despite mediation attempts by friendly countries, a durable solution has not yet been achieved.
Pakistan warns Afghanistan over terrorism support remains at the center of Islamabad’s foreign policy concerns as officials continue to push for stronger guarantees from Kabul to curb cross-border militancy.
