A court has granted Shahnawaz Amir, the main suspect in the Sarah Inam murder case, the benefit of the doubt regarding the possession of an illegally obtained Kalashnikov firearm.
The court emphasized the prosecution’s failure to substantiate charges against Shahnawaz, Sara’s husband and son of renowned journalist Aya Amir, deeming the evidence “doubtful.”
Judicial Magistrate Umar Shabbir asserted that the right to the benefit of the doubt belongs to the accused, highlighting the non-production of Constable Tariq, the complainant, as a witness.
It’s crucial to note that a separate case related to the recovery of a Kalashnikov from Shahnawaz was registered by the police.
Meanwhile, final arguments in the murder case continue at the session court.
In the preceding month, Shahnawaz rejected all prosecution evidence, dismissing it as “baseless.” During his appearance before Additional District and Sessions Judge Nasir Javed Rana, he detailed the night of the incident, mentioning that his mother prepared dinner, and they ate together before Sarah’s tragic discovery in the bathtub the next morning.
Sarah, a 37-year-old economist, was brutally murdered by her husband, Shahnawaz, using dumbbells in Islamabad’s Chak Shahzad area on September 23, 2022.
Shahnawaz initially confessed, claiming self-defense due to suspicions of his wife having an affair.
