Indian authorities have lodged a case against Australian cricketer Mitchell Marsh, a key member of the team that defeated India in the ICC World Cup 2023 final.
The FIR alleges that Mitchell Marsh displayed disrespect towards the ICC World Cup 2023 trophy following Australia’s victory over India in the final at Ahmedabad’s cricket stadium on November 19th.
After the match, a viral image from Australia’s celebratory moments drew significant attention on social media platforms. Indian fans expressed strong criticism towards Mitchell Marsh, a member of the victorious Australian squad, for a photograph depicting him resting his foot on top of the World Cup trophy. The Australian all-rounder faced backlash from many Indian fans who perceived his actions as a lack of respect for the prestigious trophy.
A social activist from Aligarh took the matter to the police, urging action against Marsh for what was perceived as a lack of regard for the prestigious trophy.
The activist also sent a copy of the FIR to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who presided over the grand ceremony of the World Cup. The demand was made for the Prime Minister to impose a ban on Marsh’s future appearances in India for cricket matches as a consequence of this incident.
