ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government has decided to file a reference before the Supreme Court to try former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, former President Arif Alvi, and former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri under Article 6 of the Constitution.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced this during a press conference on Monday. He stated that the reference will be submitted to the Supreme Court following approval from the federal cabinet.
Tarar remarked that the country had been manipulated significantly and asserted that for national development to occur, Pakistan and PTI could not coexist.
The minister further indicated that under Article 17 of the Constitution, the government has the authority to ban political parties and, based on the “evidence,” believes PTI should be banned. He accused PTI of attempting to sabotage the IMF deal.
Additionally, Tarar revealed that the government and its allied parties plan to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s judgment in the reserved seats case, citing legal flaws and strong grounds for the review. He noted that PTI had not sought relief in the case.
The Information Minister assured that the government will adhere to the law and constitution in all these processes. He emphasized that these actions aim to ensure that no one can violate the constitution, harm national interests, or undermine defense institutions in the future.
