In an electrifying showdown, Peshawar Zalmi secured a nail-biting eight-run triumph against Islamabad United during the 13th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine on Monday night.
Batting first after winning the toss, Islamabad United opted to invite Zalmi to set the pace. Openers Babar Azam and Saim Ayub delivered an impressive start, crafting a solid 77-run partnership in just 7.2 overs. Ayub’s innings of 38 runs off 21 balls, featuring three boundaries and two sixes, set the stage for Zalmi’s strong start before he was dismissed by Agha Salman.
United’s bowlers, led by skipper Shadab Khan, then struck back, claiming quick wickets including Muhammad Haris and Haseebullah. Despite the setbacks, Zalmi’s captain, Babar Azam, showcased exceptional resilience, powering through to complete a magnificent half-century and eventually an unbeaten century.
With Paul Walter and Rovman Powel falling victim to United’s bowling attack, Zalmi found themselves at 114 for 4 in 13.1 overs. However, Babar Azam’s sheer dominance on the crease, along with Asif Ali’s contribution, propelled Zalmi to a formidable total.
Babar Azam’s stellar innings, culminating in an unbeaten 111 off just 59 balls, comprised 12 fours and 2 sixes, steering Zalmi to a commanding total of 201 runs in their allotted 20 overs.
In response, Islamabad United showcased resilience but ultimately fell short, managing to reach only 193/9 despite a valiant effort from Colin Munro and Azam Khan. Arif Yaqoob’s exceptional bowling performance, including a historic four-wicket haul in the 19th over, proved decisive in securing Zalmi’s victory.
Shadab Khan led United’s bowling attack, claiming 2 wickets for 28 runs, while Naseem Shah and Agha Salman each secured one wicket.
This victory marks Peshawar Zalmi’s third consecutive win in the tournament, solidifying their position as a formidable force in the PSL.
