Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday instructed relevant government departments to stay fully prepared for any fallout from ongoing regional instability, while also praising citizens for backing the state’s austerity and fuel-conservation efforts.
Chairing a top-level session focused on how regional friction could ripple through the national economy, the premier said the country’s financial position remained steady for now. Still, he emphasized that authorities needed a well-defined strategy in place to respond quickly if conditions shift.
Petroleum Reserves Deemed Sufficient
Officials briefed the prime minister that Pakistan currently holds adequate stocks of petroleum products to cover domestic needs. Steps have also been taken to guarantee that supply chains stay intact going forward, the meeting was told.
Sharif praised what he described as a well-timed and effective government response, crediting it with keeping the country’s fuel supply situation under control. He pointed out that relief measures had specifically shielded:
- Everyday citizens
- Motorcyclists
- Rickshaw drivers
- Transporters
According to the prime minister, subsidies rolled out by the state had softened the blow of any fuel price increases on these groups. He further directed provincial administrations to work alongside federal authorities in cracking down on anyone manufacturing artificial shortages of petroleum products in the market.
Austerity Push Praised, More Sacrifice Urged
Looking back at the government’s earlier belt-tightening campaign, Sharif thanked the public for helping make it a success and urged that the same mindset be carried forward nationally. “Just as the people extended full support during the previous simplicity campaign, austerity must now be embraced at the national level,” he remarked.
He also recognized public cooperation in the broader push to conserve petroleum and energy resources, calling it a meaningful contribution to strengthening the country’s economic resilience.
Turning to the regional picture, the prime minister cautioned that intensifying tensions nearby could weigh on Pakistan’s economic trajectory in the months ahead. He repeated his call for continued alertness and preparedness across every institution with a role to play.
