The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rains across various parts of the country starting June 26, bringing relief from the intense heat.
Low-pressure air over Indian Gujarat will draw monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into eastern Pakistan on June 26. This will lead to expected rains in Sindh, including Umarkot, Badin, Thatta, and Karachi. Karachi might also see rain from July 2 to July 3.
Sindh can expect downpours from June 26 to July 1.
The forecast includes rains from June 27 to July 1 in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and other cities. Bahawalpur, Multan, Khanewal, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan will likely experience rain from June 26 to June 30.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rains are expected between June 28 and July 1. Balochistan cities like Lasbela, Khuzdar, Awaran, Barkhan, and Naseerabad might see rain from June 26 to 28.
The PMD’s rain prediction follows the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) alert about flash floods and landslides due to heavy and light rains expected in July. The NDMA warned that moderate to heavy rains might cause flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, and potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) events.
The NDMA has advised Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), and other relevant departments to stay vigilant and ready to respond. Departments must pre-place machinery and staff in vulnerable areas.
Local authorities are urged to inform residents near riverbanks and nullahs about the potential increase in water flows and facilitate evacuations from low-lying areas as needed.
Citizens are advised to take precautions, avoid electric poles and weak infrastructure, and refrain from driving or walking in waterways.
