LAHORE: The Central General Council of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) convened to choose a new president following Shehbaz Sharif’s resignation that paves the way for Nawaz Sharif’s return to the presidency.
Rana Sanaullah, the PML-N Punjab President, has affirmed the unanimous support within the party for Nawaz Sharif’s reinstatement as its chief and likely to elected president unopposed.
A total of 11 nomination papers have been submitted to appoint Nawaz Sharif as the party president, with submissions coming from top officials representing the four provinces, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Nomination papers will be received today at the Party Secretariat Model Town between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. The five-member Election Commission, chaired by Rana Sanaullah and comprising Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Ishrat Ashraf, Jamal Shah Kakar, and Khyeldas Kohistani, will oversee the scrutiny of these nominations from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The Central General Council will then proceed to elect the new president at 4:00 pm.
In a press conference yesterday, Rana Sanaullah emphasized the democratic process within the party, welcoming any eligible member to submit their candidacy. He reiterated the centrality of Nawaz Sharif to the party’s decision-making processes, asserting that core decisions have historically revolved around him and will continue to do so.
Moreover, Sanaullah clarified that Nawaz Sharif holds no grievances and that the eligibility of other potential candidates, such as Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, will be determined during the nomination scrutiny.
