ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has officially issued a construction license for the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5). The license was granted to the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), marking another milestone in the country’s nuclear energy development.
The PAEC had submitted its application for the license in April this year. Along with the request, the commission provided the Preliminary Safety Assessment Report (PSAR) and other necessary documentation. These addressed key areas such as nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management, and nuclear security.
Rigorous Evaluation Process
PNRA granted the license only after a thorough review of the submissions. The regulatory body ensured that all national and international standards were met. It also verified that the project complied with safety and security protocols.
The Chashma-5 unit is based on an advanced third-generation Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) design. Known as HPR1000 or the Hualong reactor, it incorporates both active and passive safety features. These include a double-shell containment and a reactor filtered venting system.
Innovative and Reliable Design
With a design life of 60 years, the C-5 reactor represents significant technological advancements. This is the third nuclear power plant in Pakistan built with the Hualong design. Similar reactors, K-2 and K-3, are already operational in Karachi. Both are successfully supplying electricity to the national grid.
The Chashma-5 will also set a new benchmark for nuclear energy in Pakistan. It is set to become the largest electricity-producing nuclear power plant in the country. Its capacity is projected to reach 1,200 megawatts.
Strengthening Energy Production
The approval of the C-5 construction license reinforces Pakistan’s commitment to expanding its nuclear energy capacity. The advanced design of the reactor ensures enhanced safety and efficiency. It also strengthens Pakistan’s energy sector by adding a reliable source of electricity.
This development underscores the country’s focus on sustainable and secure energy solutions. The Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 will play a crucial role in meeting the growing energy demands of Pakistan.
