PPP’s Amjad Hussain was elected unopposed as the new chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the post.
Amjad Hussain, who won from the GBA-1 constituency in the recent Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, is currently serving as president of the PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter. He has become the fifth chief minister of the region.
The development came just hours after PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected speaker and PML-N’s Malik Kifayat ur Rehman was chosen as deputy speaker, both without opposition.
Imran Nadeem and Malik Kifayat secured their positions after no rival candidates filed nomination papers within the stipulated deadline.
Members of the assembly and political leaders congratulated the newly elected office-bearers and expressed confidence that they would uphold democratic traditions and ensure the smooth functioning of the House.
Earlier, newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly took oath in a session administered by the outgoing speaker.
In the June 7 elections, the PPP emerged as the largest party by securing 13 seats. The PML-N won nine seats, while the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party secured six. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen and a PTI-backed independent candidate won one seat each.
The PML-N and IPP had already announced support for the PPP in the elections for chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker.
The PPP has decided to form the government in Gilgit-Baltistan with the backing of the PML-N and IPP.
