ISLAMABAD: The federal government has called in the army to address escalating violence during the ongoing PTI protest in the capital.
A notification from the Interior Ministry, under Article 245, gives the military authority to assist law enforcement in restoring peace. This includes imposing curfews and taking strong action against those causing unrest. Security forces have been empowered to respond with severe measures, including shooting agitators on sight if necessary.
Officials are actively identifying individuals responsible for the violence. Efforts are underway to bring all culprits to justice.
The situation intensified following a tragic incident on Srinagar Highway. A vehicle allegedly driven by PTI protesters hit Rangers personnel, leading to the deaths of four Rangers. Five others, along with two police officers, were injured.
To date, violent clashes have resulted in the deaths of four Rangers and two police officers. More than 100 police officers have sustained injuries, with several in critical condition, highlighting the seriousness of the unrest.
The protesters, responding to a call from their jailed party leader, have gathered in Islamabad. They demand the release of the former prime minister and the resolution of other issues. Demonstrators have vowed to stay at D-Chowk until their demands are met.
For two days, Islamabad has been under a strict security lockdown. Authorities have blocked major highways to stop convoys led by Bushra Bibi and KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur from entering the city.
Shipping containers have been used to seal off main roads, with heavy police and paramilitary deployment in riot gear ensuring control. These measures aim to prevent further disruption and maintain public safety.
PTI-led marches to Islamabad in recent months have repeatedly resulted in clashes with law enforcement. This ongoing wave of violence adds to the challenges faced by the government in stabilizing the situation.
