Following an unfavorable ruling, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announces its intention to move the high court against the trial court’s verdict, sentencing its founder Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi to seven years in the “un-Islamic nikah” case at Adiala jail.
The decision, accompanied by an Rs500,000 fine for each accused, stems from a petition by Bushra’s ex-husband Khawar Maneka, who deems the nikah illegal and un-Islamic.
Khan’s lawyer, Barrister Gohar, denounces the allegations as “shameless, scandalous, and unethical,” suggesting political motives.
He highlights that the case was filed based on accusations by Aun Chaudhry, a former close aide of Khan and a key witness.
Gohar questions the legal grounds for the sentence, pointing out that the judge rejected the defense’s reliance on the Supreme Court verdict regarding the iddat period.
Gohar asserts that the judge considered a subsequent function as the “valid nikah,” deviating from the actual nikah.
He alleges that these actions violate the constitution for political motives and character assassination, pledging to challenge the verdict in the high court.
Khan’s message to supporters emphasizes peace and perseverance, with a commitment not to make any deal, even if faced with a lengthy jail term.
